Toastmasters
of La Jolla's First Annual Tennis Tournament |
| |
|
Led
by Nelson Alapi, TMLJ member and teaching pro at La Jolla Beach
and Tennis Club. He provided balls and racquet's to anybody
who needed them. We had 9 participants, and after the tournament,
it was the men against the women in soccer, and the men got whipped.
As for the tennis, Craig Koontz came
in 2nd and Jeff Ledbetter won. Nelson gave us all
a surprise at the next meeting, when he presented beautiful
acrylic awards to Jeff and Craig.
Thanks Nelson for a great event. |

Improv
Night |
| |
|
We
practiced our impromptu skills, with special guest facilitator,
Jacquie Lowell.
For a quarter of a century, Jacquie Lowell has
been inspiring playful creativity in San Diegans and others across
the U.S. with her improvisational comedy classes and creativity workshops.
Toastmasters and guests, engaged in several group activities that
were fun and gave us a chance to stretch. Thanks to all the
participants. |

Speaking
Peace |
| |
|
Azim
Khamisa (www.tkf.org, www.azimkhamisa.com)
was our special guest speaker. The theme of the day was
"Speaking Peace." Go to www.tkf.org to
find out about the organization he created to stop the cycle of violence
among children and teach peacemaking tools. In addition to his speech,
he answered questions about what he does and about public speaking.
Thank you all for a great turn-out. |

Our
Backward Meeting. Have you ever just wanted to do things backwards? Well,
we just did it. We ran a regular meeting from the end to the beginning.
We started by adjourning the meeting. Then we voted for the
best speaker. And so on. We fun and learned at the same time. |

Annual
Auction |
| |
|
Members
of the club and members of the community donated products and
services, which were auctioned off, with the proceeds going to
the club. It was a great way for businesses to market their wares
and contribute to our organization.
And
we had three Toastmasters compete to be best auctioneer.
We
raised over $900 and our thanks go out to all the businesses
and people who participated. |

Sunday
Afternoon Picnic at The Cove |
| |
|
Although we had a small turnout (short notice) we had a good time,
eating, playing frisbee and just hanging out. |

Annual
Talent Show |
| |
|
The
Toastmasters of La Jolla put our talents on display and each act
was so good, so practiced and perfect, and we all watched in awe
and delight. Nicola and Abby put a program together for us that
ran without a hitch. Scott Sabul won the singing category with
a guitar and song act that so captivated us, he was called on to
do two encores. Lee Sandvick and Dennis Jasper won the dance category
for doing a jitterbug dance, Lee in a full-swinging 50s skirt and
Dennis sporting a panama hat. They were sooo good! Teresa, Barbara
and Steve won the spoken word category doing a skit that Barbara
wrote. Steve did a Southern cracker character like he was raised
in Deep Down Dixie and Teresa did a convincing job on a role she'd
hardly had time to read. The overall winning Talent went to Nicola
and Noah Kuria for their gorgeous Salsa dancing, perfectly coordinated
and steamy. Ellen Johnson gave us a very innovative and entertaining
Table "Talents,"
asking selectees to lip sync to music rather than speaking. The winning
talent was provided by John Veltre, our Area Governor, who did a
hot gyration to some steamy music. Jennifer Farr-Jones, in her inimitably
good-humored way gave funny prize awards to categories. A sumptuous
feast, including several selections of wine and delectable goodies,
was provided by Cathleen Christian. |
