A Flavor of Toastmasters Table Topics

Everyone experiences moments of impromptu speaking in their daily lives…

Have you ever been asked to give a quick recap of a meeting, prepare a 5 minute presentation in front of a group of guests, or just had to come up with a response on the spot?  These are not every day skills that everyone excels at.  These are skills that need practice and there is no better place to practice these skills than at a Toastmasters meeting.

Lets run through a typical Table Topics session:

  1. The Table Topics master states that Table Topics Word of the Day, which needs to be incorporated into the speech.
  2. The Table Topics master calls up a person to participate.
  3. The Table Topics master gives the participant either a question or a statement which they are to then give a 45sec to 1min 30sec impromptu speech.

Now that you understand a little bit about Table Topics.  Which person would you vote for the best Table Topics speech in the video above?  Put you answer in the comments below!

Until next time.

A Flavor of La Jolla

Hello All,

Welcome to the Toastmasters of La Jolla website.  I am your host, Jon, and I will be introducing you to great videos of our speakers as they progress on the path to competent communication in front of people.

In our meetings we typically have 2 to 3 prepared speeches.  This is when a person has a week or more to prepare a speech based around a desired skill to be learned from the speaker’s manual.  After the speech is given, an evaluator gives a follow up speech on how the prepared speaker might be able to improve for next time.  Consistent feedback is the key to perfecting your skills.

Our first speaker was Vera and here was her speech:

 What an amazing speech Vera!

Her evaluator was Jay and here was his evaluation:

Fantastic feedback.

Come out to the next Toastmasters of La Jolla meeting which is tonight at the YMCA Firehouse in La Jolla at 6:30p.  Remember you can come in as many times as you’d like without paying until you want to become a member, so no pressure ever.
